The drawer

Go and open it. You know the one.
Most households have a drawer, a shoebox, or a shelf in the garage where dead electronics go to wait. A phone with a cracked screen. A laptop that got slow. Chargers for devices you no longer own. Nobody decided to keep these things. They just never decided to do anything else with them.
That drawer is the single most important thing in this course, because it is where the problem is small enough to see.
"Away" is not a place
When you throw something away, it goes somewhere. That sounds obvious written down, but almost nobody thinks it through, because the whole design of waste collection is to make the somewhere invisible. A bin is emptied. A truck leaves. The problem appears solved.
For most household rubbish, the destination is a landfill or an incinerator. For electronics, the answer is more complicated and much more interesting, because an old laptop is not really waste at all. It is a box of refined metals that somebody spent enormous energy pulling out of the ground.
The drawer is where that box sits, doing nothing, for years.
Why the drawer exists
It is worth being honest about why. People are not stupid or lazy for having one. The drawer exists because every alternative is worse:
Throwing it in the bin feels wrong. Most people have absorbed the idea that electronics shouldn't go in general waste, even if they couldn't say exactly why. That instinct is correct, and it stops the device leaving the house.
Selling it is work. Photographing, listing, describing the fault, dealing with messages, posting it. For a device worth very little, the effort exceeds the return.
Recycling it requires knowing where. There may be a drop-off point nearby, but you'd have to look it up, check its hours, and make a trip.
And there's the data. The vague, entirely reasonable worry that your photos and messages are still on it, and that handing it to a stranger means handing those over too.
So the device stays. Not through carelessness, but because doing nothing is the only option that costs nothing today.
What the delay actually costs
Time is not neutral for a device. A three-year-old laptop with a working screen and a replaceable drive is a machine somebody can use for schoolwork right now. The same laptop after seven years in a drawer has an unsupported operating system, a battery that has quietly died from sitting at whatever charge it was left on, and a market value of roughly nothing.
The materials inside are still there — those don't degrade. But the device, the assembled working thing that took a factory to make, is gone. What is left is only worth what it can be melted into.
The gap between those two outcomes is the entire subject of this course. Reuse sits at the top of the hierarchy and recycling sits well below it, and the thing that moves a device from one to the other is usually just time spent in a drawer.
Your first task
Before the next lesson, count.
Walk through your home and find every electronic device that is not currently being used. Phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, monitors, printers, cables, chargers, games consoles, cameras, e-readers, keyboards, external drives. Anything with a plug or a battery that nobody has touched in six months.
Write down the number. Just the number.
Two things usually happen. The first is that the count is higher than expected — most people guess three or four and find nine. The second is that at least one device turns out to still work fine, and gets put back into use that same afternoon.
That number is your baseline. At the end of this course you will be asked for it again.
