The four fates

Your phone leaves your hand. Then what?
There are only four answers. Every device ever discarded has ended up in one of them, and the distance between the best and the worst is enormous — for the person who ends up with the device, for the people who process it, and for the material inside it.
Learn the four and you can follow any device, anywhere.
One: landfill
The device is buried.
This is the simplest fate and the most wasteful. Everything from the last module — the copper, the gold, the palladium, the cobalt — goes into the ground in a form nobody will ever economically recover. The energy spent mining and refining all of it is written off against a single use.
Landfill has a second problem too. Electronics don't sit there inertly. Batteries are a fire risk in collection trucks and at transfer stations, which is why almost every waste authority asks you to keep them out of general rubbish. That instinct from the last module — that electronics shouldn't go in the bin — turns out to have a very practical reason behind it.
Two: informal recycling
The device is taken apart by hand, usually in a country that didn't manufacture it and didn't buy it, often by people with no protective equipment, frequently using fire to get at the copper.
Material genuinely is recovered here. That's the uncomfortable part: informal recycling is recycling, and it is often better at extracting valuable metal than a mechanical shredder is. What it costs gets paid in human health rather than in money, which is exactly why it is cheap.
The next lesson covers this properly. It deserves more than a bullet point.
Three: formal recycling
The device goes to a facility that shreds, sorts and smelts it under controlled conditions, with the dust captured, the workers protected, and the outputs documented.
This is the fate most people picture when they say "recycling", and it is genuinely good. It is also, as the last module established, the minority outcome:

Formal recycling still loses something. Shredding a laptop recovers the metal and destroys the computer. Which brings us to the fate almost nobody chooses.
Four: reuse
The device carries on being a device.
Somebody wipes it, replaces whatever failed, and passes it to a person who needs a computer. No smelting, no shredding, no new mining. The embodied energy — everything spent mining, refining, shipping and assembling it — keeps doing its job instead of being written off.
Reuse sits at the top of the hierarchy for electronics, above every kind of recycling, and it is the most-skipped option of the four. Partly that's because reuse is harder to organise than a bin. Partly it's because "recycle your old phone" is a message people have heard for twenty years, and "give your old phone to someone who needs one" is not.
The order, and why it is an order
Best to worst: reuse, formal recycling, informal recycling, landfill.
That ranking isn't a matter of taste. It falls out of a single question — how much of the original effort survives?
Reuse keeps all of it. Formal recycling keeps the material and loses the machine. Informal recycling keeps some of the material, loses the machine, and transfers the cost to somebody's lungs. Landfill keeps nothing.
Who decides
Here is the part worth sitting with. You do.
Not entirely, and not with certainty. But a device's fate is largely set at the moment it changes hands. Hand a working laptop to a refurbisher and it gets fate four. Hand the same laptop to a shredder and it gets fate three, permanently. Put it in a bin and you have chosen fate one. Hand it to an uncertified broker who exports it, and you have chosen fate two without knowing that you did.
That last case is what this module is really about, because it is the one where people who believe they are doing the right thing get the second-worst result.
